As for BBS mentioned in CROSSFIR.TXT: it looks like it was a 10-line BBS based out of Cleveland known as WBBS Channel 1 that offered 4.5GB of files and rich community features, including a means of playing 4-player Doom. It was apparently in operation from 1994-1995. I’m not sure what "The Proving Grounds" refers to. Perhaps that was the name of their gaming hub.
Regardless, it’s neat that it’s still possible to find tidbits of information about this stuff on the modern Internet, 30 years later. 🙂
