Forgive Me Father 2 News — DevLog 2 – Forgive Me Father 2 art style changes and direction
Go to Source

Greetings, Cultists!

We’ve received many questions on Forgive Me Father’s Discord, Steam and social media platforms about the art direction of the sequel, and we’re here to shed some light on that matter. So, let’s talk about major changes to the art style coming in the sequel and Forgive Me Father 2’s graphic design in general, shall we?

Forgive Me Father 2 will launch into Early Access on October 19th

What? They’re rotating!

As some of you had an opportunity to notice, the Forgive Me Father 2 teaser showed some of the enemies from multiple angles, some of you have already experienced it on your own in the demo, and that’s definitely one of the most significant modifications in the game’s visual aspect. So, why the changes? At the beginning of the first installment’s development, we had limited resources, and going with 2D sprites in a 3D environment felt like the best choice for us but also an interesting way to create a unique, cartoony experience that we always had in mind when we thought about Forgive Me Father.

The final effect and the reception of the game’s art surpassed our expectations. That said, we wanted to keep that distinctive comic-like feeling well-known from the first installment, but also add something fresh and innovative to the sequel. We decided to give our sprites additional depth, making them even more alive than before. Unlike the first game, sprites now change depending on the angle the player is facing with 8 possible directions. This means the player gets more information regarding where the enemy is heading, which can be extremely useful, especially if an opponent likes to hide around or flank. Another thing is that extra dimensions equal extra possibilities. Now we can show more complex and detailed animations, which makes fighting enemies more fun than ever!

Here’s a quick 360° peek at Liquidator enemy which pictures the new sprite system.

And here’s a comparison of different angles of Liquidator enemy from the first installment and the sequel. Forgive Me Father (top side) vs. Forgive Me Father 2 (bottom side).

Another thing worth mentioning is that the visual assets in Forgive Me Father are hand-drawn to maintain a coherent, comic-like style. And here we’re talking not only about enemies and weapons but also textures, level art, you name it.

We set the bar high when it comes to creating a visual experience in Forgive Me Father. That’s why we pay great attention to the details of each level with unique resources, which will make them stay in your head for a long, long time. While working on the sequel, we took it a step further not only in terms of the detail of said assets but also their quantity, so you can expect a feast for the eyes!

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading and make sure to wishlist Forgive Me Father 2 if you haven’t done it already and try the DEMO that’s available on Forgive Me Father 2’s Store Page. Don’t forget to drop by our Discord to chat with us and other players as well!

Until next time,
Byte Barrel team
